Artist Statement
I focus on a scene, object or through a doorway or space in a “meditative/contemplative” way, visualize intense color and fix on a frame which then becomes my painting. It’s almost as if my mind’s eye is taking a snapshot of what I will paint. Using a single subject and isolating/dismissing extraneous visual details by abstracting the background creates a pure image which pops out. Painting in oils allows me to glaze in many layers creating a deep, luscious, dreamy effect and mystical experience which transcends the narrative glance when looking at our world. Painters that have influenced me are Cezanne, Matisse and Morris Graves.
I was born in New York City, raised on the Jersey Shore and moved to NYC at 18 years old for an Academic degree and formal Art training. I owned and ran a design firm in NYC and raised my 3 children in NYC and Connecticut.
I started painting at 5 years old, by keeping a daily calendar on my bedroom wall. Retirement from work in 2019 has allowed me to paint professionally full time.
I currently live in Tucson Arizona and paint in my studio attached to my home.
